Both refer to the same game. The official Steam title is "Mortal Shell II", but the developer, press and most players write "Mortal Shell 2". This site uses the common spelling.
Do I need to play Mortal Shell 1 before Mortal Shell 2?
No. Mortal Shell 2 is a standalone sequel — the story is self-contained and the developer pitches it as a fresh entry point. Returning elements like the Shell Eredrim land harder if you know the first game, but nothing blocks new players.
When did Mortal Shell 2 come out?
Worldwide release was August 20, 2026 on PC (Steam), PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Advance Access for Devout Edition buyers started August 17, and an Open Beta ran from July 31.
How long is Mortal Shell 2?

Does Mortal Shell 2 have difficulty settings?
Not a traditional difficulty menu. The game ships tuning levers instead: Slayer Seals can make executions refill health (easier), and you can turn off the sun for a harder nocturnal run. Note the official caveat — using the Slayer Seal assist disables achievements, which the developers have publicly addressed.
What is the Slayer Seal controversy about?
Using the Slayer Seal "assist mode" disables achievements. After launch-week criticism, the developers told press they "didn't intend to lock everybody out" and are looking at the feedback. Check the patch notes page for any change to this behavior.
Is Mortal Shell 2 on Game Pass?
No. At launch Mortal Shell 2 is a paid title ($49.99) on Steam, PS5 and Xbox — it is not in Game Pass as of late August 2026. If that changes we will note it here.
